Sarah Matthews has been playing the fiddle since she was 11 years old, developing an interest in Derbyshire, English, French and Swedish folk dance tunes and English song. She has a love of playing for dancing, developing rich harmony lines and composing her own songs and dance tunes. Over the years, she has played with Nancy Kerr, Lucy Ward, Doug Eunson, David Gibb, Elly Lucas, Cupola, Cupola:Ward, DanceCupola, The Rattlers, Moirai, Jo May, Cross o’th Hands, storyteller Maria Whatton, and OPUS Music as a Musician in Healthcare.
A long-standing tutor of the violin and folk fiddle, she loves sharing musical ideas and engaging students with an infectious enthusiasm, sharing techniques and is passionate about harmony and playing chords. She has enjoyed teaching at folk festivals across the UK and in Ontario, Canada.
During lockdown she has become quite accustomed to teaching on Zoom, and successfully ran a fiddle workshop for the Sidmouth Crowdfunder in August. Sarah is now proposing a short series of online Zoom fiddle workshops, with the help and support of Live to your Living Room, covering a variety of different aspects of fiddle playing. These will include, hornpipes, jig styles, mazurka feel, development of harmonies, looking at chords and simple basslines, pulsing the bow, simple ornamentation, perhaps even a song for Christmas …..
So get yourself signed up and get some tunes going live at home!
